Memorable GROW Family Day for Mid West Visitors

Posted on

The day began at 9.30a.m. when our driver, Tadhg picked us up from Henry Street, making a few other collections en-route to Dungarvan.

This rare bus day trip out created an air of excitement and anticipation as many were availing of the opportunity to visit another GROW region i.e. South East. Passing through the main towns of Tipperary, Cahir and Clonmel we arrived at our destination at 11.30a.m., making good time and with weather to match.

We received a tremendous welcome from all and sundry, namely Gertrude Howley, Mary Hennessy and their many helpers on the day. We were treated to tea and scones which ‘hit the spot’ after our journey and a fabulous lunch was served up at 1pm with numerous trimmings.

All this took place in the grounds and interior of St. Mary’s Church of Ireland which Gertrude managed to acquire from Rev. James for the events of the day. What a beautiful building and this married with the scenery and views from the seafront, affording our gang to take a casual stroll in the surrounds after we mixed and mingled with our fellow GROWers and supporters.

walkAt 2p.m. local historian, John Young took an enthusiastic group, Mid Westerners included, on a guided tour of Dungarvan town. What a mine of information! From the founding of the town to the famine and workhouses, from Spanish armadas to World War 1, from tragedies at sea to famous local residents past and present, from ancient buildings to modern town planning, John covered a multitude.

He backed up his accounts with relevant artefacts and photographs. Alluding to immigration, he identified the links between Dungarvan and Newfoundland. His stories contained great detail and were tinged with tragedy and coloured with humour.

This was a very enriching and informative experience for those in attendance. A huge ‘mile maith agat’ to John for enlightening us on the history and hidden gems of Dungarvan.

Four o’clock brought more tea and then we retired indoors to the official welcome from Gertrude and her expression of gratitude to her many friends who had made the day’s events possible.

Then our own Noirin gave her inspiring account of how GROW has contributed to her recovery. Many thanks Noreen for your courage and for the articulate way you told your story. Next we were treated to local musicians and singers which were delightful within the peaceful confines of the packed church.

All in all, it was a wonderful day. Many thanks to the above mentioned folk, our South East GROW friends who represent everything that is good in the organisation – truth, character and friendship.

It was really great to make new connections outside our comfort zone so a big ‘well done’ to Dungarvan GROW for a top class day and for the fabulous sense of community you display – the same community that Gertrude states is crucial in our recovery.

By 5.30p.m., we are homeward bound. A singsong ensued with a wide selection of songs and willing singers. Back safely in Limerick by 8.30pm, after a satisfying day enjoyed by all.

Many thanks to all who travelled and participated from Midwest GROW. What a day to remember! It was great to receive the invitation from Gertrude Howley and Mary Hennessy which gave us an opportunity to celebrate all that’s great about GROW and its GROWers.

Our sincere thanks to James O’Halloran,  Area Coordinator Midwestern Region, for submitting this piece.
