Very Enjoyable GROW Southern Outing to Muckross House
15 GROWers representing seven groups from Cork and Kerry met at Muckross House and, after some leisurely time in the gardens, the group’s own dedicated guide took them on a very interesting and informative tour of the house.
All in attendance were in awe at the grandeur, scale and beauty of the house and its contents, artefacts and beautiful furniture. Listening to the history of the house and to the accounts of how it was run and managed was an eye opener.
After the guided tour, all had a very lovely lunch at Muckross House Café. Afterwards, the group enjoyed a visit to the shop to browse and purchase some beautiful works of creation from the artists and craftspeople employed at the house. The day ended with a minibus tour of Muckross Traditional Farm, stopping off at the various farmyards, animal pens and houses. All were transported back in time to an age where work was done manually, with the help of horses and donkeys.
“We were treated to bastible bread with homemade butter at the servants house and, at the farmer’s main house we were given a taste of griddle bread from the turf fire griddle. As evening approached, we were tired but very happy with our day’s touring and entertainment. Everybody expressed their great satisfaction with the outing,” says Area Coordinator Jerry Cronin.
