Telling Our Stories.

The Grow Mental Health vision is an Ireland where no one needs to navigate mental health challenges or life’s struggles alone. When someone tells their story of challenges, dark moments, hope, or recovery the listener feels less alone. We feel less alone when we share and are seen in our stories. Storytelling is an age-old vehicle for healing and growth. Find out more about the WHY and HOW of storytelling in the context of the Grow MH program plus Grow news and updates. Enjoy! STORYTELLING
by Jonathan, Grow Member, Eastern Region

We are the only storytelling species on the planet. As children a big part of our nurturing is to be told stories. “Tell me a story”, the child pleads. We grow up and live with, and in stories. Being human in this world has infinite possibilities. But there is a pattern in this infinity.  There is a protagonist, a hero or heroine, and there is their story. We see how the hero grows (or doesn’t in a tragic story). We identify with the protagonist; they are everyday men and women. They are us. The hero’s journey is a handbook for life - an instruction book in the art of being human.

The hero’s journey is not an invention but an observation. A recognition of a beautiful design, a set of principles that govern the conduct of life and the world of storytelling the way physics and chemistry govern the physical world. From this simple design, infinite and highly varied stories, both fiction and non-fiction, are created.

The stories start with the protagonist in a “wasteland”, a life without meaning or a life of suffering. Something is “not right”. Then the universe comes knocking on the door of the would-be hero. Either a call to adventure or things get so bad that the protagonist is forced on the journey.

The journey from darkness to light is long, with many tests and trials. There are real dangers. Every adventure has its dangers, and this life is an adventure, is it not? In this world we are all forced to take this journey. It is the pattern of life. We can’t save another person from his or her journey. We all must take our own. It is how we grow and become fully human.

In Grow we share our stories. They are the roadmaps of our life. They give others hope and show them the way. They are a testimony that we can grow. The hero and the heroine come back home with a gift: their story.

FIONA'S STORY
By Fiona, Grow Member, Eastern Region

My name is Fiona I did attend the Raheny Grow group for 10 years.

Ever since I went to the first National Weekend, I loved listening to other people testimonies. I always felt like I got something out of them and I was encouraged me to write my story.

It took a while for me to do this, but I did. I gave my story at all other levels like my own Grow Group, other Grow Groups, a Regional Weekend, on the radio, and at Gatekeepers.  I’ve been asking if I could give my story at the National Weekend for the last 7 years. Louise and I would ask if I could do it at the next one but each year it never happened. But then Mary Walsh, Grow National Volunteer Coordinator, asked me to do it at the 2023 National Weekend. I was excited but also a bit apprehensive as I was hoping that my story was good enough for people to hear.

Leading up the National Weekend, I practiced giving my story on the Wednesday online group with Grow Area Coordinator Felicia Black and Mary Walsh. This practice helped me to be able to give my story without breaking down to where I couldn’t speak. I also practiced reading my story all week before the National Weekend so that I wouldn’t be talking to quickly or getting overwhelmed at certain parts of the story where I always seem to break down.

The day of the testimony I was a bit nervous but excited all at the same time. I always say to myself before a big task that I would rather try and fail than not try at all. This saying always helps me to stay focused. Sitting up there on stage was the best feeling as I felt like I was coming full circle in Grow. After giving my testimony, people came up to me and said that my story was inspiration, was good, and that most of them could relate to it. This was a good feeling to know that you are not alone and that you can overcome the obstacles in your life. That mental health issue is part of you but not all of you. I was hoping my story would help other people to realise this.

Since giving my story I did take a step back from Grow as I feel like my mental health is in a good place. I would still use the Grow Program to help me with my day-to-day activities and my physical health issues that I am currently going through. The saying I use all the time is 'take one day a time'. I would encourage everybody in Grow to start writing their story as it is a healing process that helps you to see that you are stronger than you give yourself credit for.

Thanks for reading this!

EVERYONE HAS A STORY: THE MOTIVATION AND EXPERIENCE OF FACILITATING EMPOWERING WORKSHOPS
by Eileen Clevenger, Grow Area Coordinator, Northeastern Region
In a world that often feels disconnected, telling our story offers us a rare and precious opportunity for genuine human connection. Sharing your own story and hearing other people's stories, is a fundamental part of the Grow Program of Recovery and Growth.

During the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, I researched, designed, and began delivering to Grow members, an online personal storytelling workshop. Facilitating these workshops has provided opportunities to connect, inspire, and to help empower Grow members. The motivation behind these workshops is rooted in firsthand experiences and with the belief that everyone has a unique narrative, one that can offer deep insights, that helps to foster empathy and drive personal growth. At the heart of these workshops is a profound desire to create a psychological safe space where members feel seen, heard, and valued, possibly for the first time. For many people, certain aspects of their mental health challenges are faced in silence, this workshop aims to change that narrative.

Mental health challenges affect millions of people across the globe, yet many suffer in silence, feeling isolated or ashamed of their struggles. I found the process of sharing my individual experiences of mental health challenges transformative in helping me to nurture healing, build resilience and staying open to connection with others. The purpose of running these workshops is to help members find the same strength and to realise their mental health story matters. I advocate for members to share their own stories in an open inclusive and supportive space that helps remove the barriers of stigma and shame.

Sharing your story is a powerful act of self-expression that is not always easy. It takes courage to share deeply personal stories. The workshop acknowledges the emotional complexities of telling your story and offers guidance to help you navigate the challenges of the journey. Sharing your story can feel like standing in front of the world with your heart exposed, knowing how difficult it is to find the courage to be vulnerable and honest.  The fear of judgement, the pain of revisiting difficult experiences, and the uncertainty of how others will respond – is all part of the challenge. It is also where the healing begins.

Telling your story is not about forcing yourself to relive the past or pushing through discomfort before you are ready, it`s about finding the right moment, feeling supported and emotionally safe, knowing that your voice matters. Every step of the process deserves compassion and respect.

Facilitating personal storytelling workshops is a privilege. One of the particularly fulfilling aspects of delivering these workshops is witnessing the transformation of members. Initially, many members feel hesitant and unsure about sharing their stories, however as the workshop progresses, they see others taking the leap, a collective bravery emerges. The space fills with a palpable sense of trust and connection, allowing even the most reserved members to find their voices. The diversity of stories shared in the workshops is another remarkable aspect, where no two are the same, as each member brings their own unique background, experiences, and emotions to the table. These diverse stories shared in the workshops enrich the discussions, often leading to unexpected moments of insight and revelation.

Facilitating these gatherings is a deeply motivating and fulfilling experience, driven by the belief in the power of personal stories to heal, inspire and unite. Together we can embark on a shared journey of discovery. We learn that every story matters and from telling our stories, we not only understand ourselves better, but we also build bridges of empathy and understanding with others. This ultimately is the true power of telling your story – a power that lies within each of us, waiting to be shared.

EASTERN REGION DAY OUT
By Jonathan, Grow Member, Eastern Region

We had a wonderful day in Hazel House nestled in the foothills of the Dublin Mountains. It was a 'Goldilocks' day, not too hot or cold, but just right. John Farren was master of ceremonies and skillfully guided us through the events of the day. Getting the ball rolling, he welcomed us as part of the Grow family. First, he called on myself to say a few words on the newsletter. I thanked all Growers for their articles, poems and testimonies. I also mentioned that sometime in the near future we hope to go national with a hard copy newsletter on a bi-monthly basis. Two generous Growers offered to write their testimonies for the upcoming newsletters.

Thank you. Our stories give us hope and engender healing.

A few snaps from the wonderful day out. Thanks to our own Stephen Geary for capturing the event so beautifully.

Then two courageous Growers, John and Lorraine gave their stories in front of 55 people! They both spoke so honestly and from the heart. There is strength in vulnerability. We all empathised with their journeys from darkness to light and we were edified by their stories. We showed our gratitude with praise.

After the testimonies, the energetic walked further up the hill with its views of the city below. Others followed Gerry, the owner of the Centre and a longtime Grower, for a tour. First, we saw the garden allotment where Paschal and the other green fingered Growers’ plant and tend vegetables. I saw potatoes, kale and rhubarb amongst others. Then Gerry showed us an old-fashioned traditional traveller caravan that they reconstructed. I was struck by its beauty and colours. And how a whole family would live a life squeezed within. Next, we meet the animals. There was a sheep, some cheeky goats, and an alpaca - a South American animal that is a member of the camel family. We fed himself and the goats pieces of carrot. The alpaca was shy and the horse too. But the donkeys came to us so we could lavish our love on them. Next Gerry showed us the stone labyrinth and the bonfire area with a healthy fire ablaze.

Then we returned to the workshop where we assembled square candle holders
and plaques with Grow wisdoms printed on them. All this was under the supervision of the Master Carpenter Gerry. Everyone enjoyed a generous and very delicious lunch.

We then returned to the function room for a cuppa and eagerly waited for the
music to begin. And what a session it was! There was Eanna on the guitar, Gerry on the ukulele, and Derek on the violin. I was amazed at their talent. Gerry entertained us and encouraged Growers in the audience to sing and they did! I’m tone deaf so I marvelled at the ability and courage of my fellow Growers. Five o'clock came too soon and so we began to leave. People brought home some Grow merchandise and I was heartened to see only 3 newsletters left out of a batch of 90.

We would like to thank Gerry, Paschal, John, Patricia and all the Eastern Regional T
eam for their work in organising and running the event. And all the Growers who came along. Old friends met, and new friends made. A day to truly remember.

CHADWICK’S OF THOMAS STREET HOSTS CHARITY BBQ FOR GROW MENTAL HEALTH

On the 26th of July, the staff at Chadwick’s Builders Providers on Thomas Street came together to host a charity BBQ and raffle event for their loyal customers, creating a fun-filled day in the spirit of giving. The event, which was well-attended and enjoyed by all, aimed to raise much-needed funds for Grow Mental Health

The day was full of warmth and excitement, with everyone at the branch pitching in to ensure the event ran smoothly. Customers and staff mingled over tasty burgers, and the raffle added an extra layer of excitement. The community atmosphere created a wonderful sense of togetherness, with everyone coming together for a common cause.

The highlight of the day was the generosity shown by both the customers and the staff of Chadwick’s. The branch was buzzing with positive energy, as participants wholeheartedly supported the fundraising effort. Every raffle ticket purchased, and every BBQ meal enjoyed contributed to the growing total, with over €400 going directly to Grow Mental Health. The funds raised from the event will help us continue to provide vital mental health services, including peer support groups, education, and community outreach.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Chadwick’s and all those who participated, donated, and made the day such a success. It was a wonderful reminder of the power of community, and we are honoured to support such a worthwhile cause.

Here's to many more events like this, where fun, connection, and charity come together to make a meaningful difference!

GROW IN THE COMMUNITY

OLD FAIR DAY IN SLIGO
By Marie Gillagan, Grow Area Coordinator, NorthWestern Region

Marie Gilligan, Area Co-ordinator for Sligo and Leitrim areas, attended the 37th Tubbercurry Old Fair Day on Wednesday, August 14th. The day's setup included a cafe style information point for the general public with lots of entertainment that consisted of music, dancing, refreshments, and a play area for children. This inclusive fair day welcomed and celebrated diverse communities. This historical event provided the ideal opportunity to showcase Grow and heighten the profile of the organisation. It offered people the opportunity to learn about the services and supports provided by Grow locally, and to speak with the Area Coordinator in a relaxed and informal setting. The occasion also provided an excellent opportunity for mental health groups to network, learn, and connect with one another. It demonstrated the power and strength of organisations working together to promote positive mental health and well-being for all members of their communities.

TOGETHER AT THE CASTLE MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING EVENT IN MALLOW
By Noreen O'Sullivan, Grow Area Coordinator, Southern Region

Sunday September 8th saw the return, for the third year, of the very successful “Together  At The Castle “ Mental Health and Wellbeing Event in Mallow Castle

This free event is the brainchild of HSE Cork Kerry Community, in partnership with Cork County Council, Mallow Chamber of Commerce, and others, to raise awareness of the many available Support Services in the area.

While, the sun didn’t shine, the clouds didn’t deter the  five thousand plus crowd attending this wonderful free event, under the gaze of Mallow Castle and its beautiful grounds .

There was something for everyone.  From Yoga, Face Painting, Wobbly Circus, and Games for the children, to Live Music, Food, Arts & Crafts, Comedians, and Well Being Workshops.

There were over 50 Local and Regional Community Groups with information stands on the day.

The Grow stand was very busy, I am delighted to say, with over 500 leaflets distributed, and many stopping to enquire about meetings in their area. Interestingly, many asked  “What can Grow do for me”? This has very much changed, from “Who is this Organisation and what do you do?”

It was very obvious from the event that the message of Grow is getting out to the Community. Our good work needs to continue, as our service is needed now more than ever. As our last visitor to our stand left, she said, “I now leave the day with hope in my heart”

A great end to a very worthwhile enjoyable  informative day.

GROW MENTAL HEALTH PODCAST: GATHERING FOR GROW MENTAL HEALTH

Many people know that our free Grow Mental Health support groups are funded by the HSE, but what about the rest of our resources? It is through fundraising and donations that we are able to offer supports and connection beyond the groups. John and Stephen completed an epic cycling challenge in August to raise vital funds for Grow MH and in this episode Jenny talks to them about their adventure and why they fundraise for Grow. A common theme throughout the conversation is the positive impact physical activity and fitness has on our mental health. We hope you enjoy the episode.

You can check out some of the highlights from their epic challenge in this video created by Stephen:
