Local Mental Health Support in Roscommon

Mental Health and Wellbeing is as vital to every person as is good Physical Health.

Are you looking for a safe, welcoming space to talk, listen, and connect with others who understand what you are going through? Grow Mental Health offers peer support meetings locally in County Roscommon. If transport or time is an issue for you, you can simply join an online group but the choice is yours.

What are peer support meetings?

They are peer-led support groups where people with similar experiences come together to share, listen, and support one another. These meetings are based on mutual respect, and empathy where you can tell your story in a confidential and friendly setting. Whether you’re facing mental health challenges, grief, or just looking for a space to talk, peer support can make a real difference.

A typical meeting includes:

• A warm welcome from the group and the organiser of the meeting
• You just need to listen and observe (no pressure to share).
• You will be lent a Program Book and Method Card to follow the meeting structure.

You will be given a task at the end of the meeting which might simply be to come back the following week. Then there is a final closing check-in.

Yes, all our meetings are bound by strict confidentiality rules. At the start of every meeting a confidentiality statement is read out loud and is to be respected by all. What is said in the room stays in the room. All participants are asked to respect each other’s privacy.

Support from weekly meetings can improve people’s wellbeing, often leading to fewer hospital stays, stronger support networks and increased self-esteem, confidence and social skills.

Members benefit from the shared lived experience of others, fostering a sense of belonging and inclusion, while reducing feelings of isolation.

Grow groups offer a safe and supportive space to build relationships, develop coping mechanisms, and learn self-care strategies. With the encouragement of others, members can openly share any challenges they are facing.

We all want and need good mental health in our lives. We want to feel in control of our decisions and able to cope with life’s stresses. Grow groups provide a safe space to talk and to build a personal toolbox of skills to draw on in both good times and difficult times.

No. Peer support is not a substitute for medical or psychological care. It’s a complementary support system, offering community and connection alongside medical services. Peer Support is also not 1:1 counselling.

We understand that younger adults may face unique challenges and often feel more comfortable in a group with their own age group. If there’s enough interest, we’re hoping to start a peer support group specifically for younger adults aged 18 to 30 in the Roscommon area.
