February 2024 Newsletter:
Love Ourselves and Others Back to Good Health

In February, love is in the air! At Grow, we know the power of love in our mental health journeys. When we can learn to love ourselves, we can find inner peace.  Sometimes connecting with others in love and friendship provides the support they need to start loving themselves. Whatever love looks like to you, celebrate it this month!

We did just that on February 10th for our Acts of BIG LOVE concert in Dublin. Read on for the details of the wonderful and love-filled event. You'll also find lots of Grow news and updates. Enjoy our latest newsletter! You can reach us on our social media platforms and by email

ACTS OF BIG LOVE CONCERT
By Jenny Synnott, Grow Communications, Marketing, and Fundraising  Officer

On Saturday, February 10th, Grow Mental Health took over Grafton Street to spread BIG LOVE. The Grow Program teaches us how to love people back to positive mental health every day, but we know that Valentine's is the perfect time to remind people of just how important love and friendship are for everyone, especially anyone currently experiencing a mental health challenge. Supported once again by MINI Ireland, this event grew quickly into a massive opportunity to not only help every heart around find its rhythm but to raise the Grow profile like never before.

Our friends and great supporters the Rathfarnham Ukulele Group (RUGS) and Singer/Songwriter Luke Clerkin, a member of Grow in the Eastern Region were the first to commit to performing for free and others quickly followed suit. From Dublin-based Poet Rachel Hegarty to Louis Walsh's latest boy band collective Next In Line and many more, our Bewleys Cafe Balcony stage was hopping from 2 PM 'til late on Saturday. And it wasn't just about the music. While enjoying our Acts of BIG LOVE concert we asked Dubliners to:

1. Spread the Love: Share their favourite moments from the concert on social media to create a wave of positivity and awareness that reaches every corner of Ireland.

2. Support the Cause: With donations of any amount.

3. Connect with Resources: Grow staff and volunteers were at our information and wellness stand to share resources and support.

4. Commit to Self-Love: Take a moment to reflect on their mental well-being. Commit to practicing self-love and self-care. Small actions, when done consistently, can make a big difference.

5. Spread Kindness: In the spirit of Valentine's Day, we can spread kindness like confetti. Perform random acts of kindness and let the love you experience tonight ripple through your community.

The generosity of the performers was matched by that of Grafton Street passers-by who donated in their droves. A special thanks to the bucket shakers and all of the volunteers there on the day to help with the fundraising and sharing Grow's message. MINI Ireland contributed €8,000 toward Grow Mental Health plus lots of PR support in the lead-up to the day. Bewleys Cafe donated space for the concert, the artists, a gorgeous affirmation wall, our Grow wellness station, and plenty of coffee and tea on the day.

Interim CEO Annabel O'Keeffe was on hand with her family to support the event. Annabel addressed the gathering crowd on Grafton Street and husband Andrew slotted in as event MC. Their children, amongst many others including staff, members and volunteers, family members, and friends all helped to shake collection buckets and distribute Yellow Roses. Annabel noted of the concert: "Everything went really brilliantly and the atmosphere was electric on Grafton Street. Thanks to all of the performers and volunteers."

Grow Board Chair John O'Donnell extended warm thanks to everyone involved in the event adding: "A special thanks to Bewleys of Grafton Street for hosting this wonderful event, all their wonderful staff who were so helpful, and also to MINI Ireland for their continued support to Grow. "

In all, the concert was a great success and the crowds on the Capital's busiest shopping street that day know all about Grow and our vision of an Ireland where no one needs to navigate mental health challenges or life’s struggles alone.

  NEW YEAR, NEW WEBSITE!
Have you seen the new look Grow website yet?! Launched at the end of January, the new site had an updated look and feel and more streamlined navigation. The goal of the new site is to show those wondering about Grow Mental Health what we're all about from the very first page. Guided by the Grow values of hope, inclusion, integrity, change, connection, and support, the updated site is rich with Grow wisdom and group member reflections. The project was a long time in the making and expertly led by Eimear Kelleher, Grow Marketing Support Officer with input from the Grow Content Creation and Program Teams, CEO, Marketing team, and Board. Over the last year, our site has continued to rise in Google rankings, thanks to Eimear's efforts and this revamped site will only help to keep Grow at the top of the search engine results. We welcome your feedback on the new-look site. You can reach us at [email protected]. Enjoy!

GOODBYE AND HELLO
By Mary Purcell, Grow Regional Manager

It is with a heavy heart that we are saying Goodbye in the Midwest to Amie Hughes and Michael Crowe in the next couple of weeks. Michael and Amie have worked as Area Coordinators in the Region for the last number of years and to say their contribution has been immense is an understatement. Both have brought compassion, integrity, passion, commitment, and honesty to their role. The welfare of the Grow members and their support of their colleagues and of me as their Manager has always been paramount with them.

They are two very different people,  but worked so well together for the good of all those whose lives they have touched in their time in the role – once we sorted out Michael's aversion to paperwork and being prepared and Amie’s love of organisation and heat, it all ran smoothly!!

The Regional Team, the Staff, and a great gathering of members, met on 24th January for a “surprise” party to say goodbye and thanks to Michael and Amie – and it was one of those special Grow events, where many of the people present spoke about the positive impact the two ACs had made in their lives.

We wish Michael and Amie, every happiness, good health, and good times as they move to a new stage of their lives – the Grow door will always be open for them.

Our Wonderful Regional Administrator Joan and I were feeling the loss of Michael and Amie this past while so were very relieved and grateful when Celia Brett came along last April to replace Amie during her maternity leave and has now become a permanent member of Staff. Celia has proven to us all that the Clare people are as good as it gets. We welcome Celia and are so grateful for all she has done, the connections she has made, and the support she gives to all of us, members and colleagues alike.

In the last few days, we have been delighted to welcome Area Coordinator Danielle Londra to the Midwest Team. We have nearly stolen her from the Digital Services Team and know that Danielle will bring the energy, passion, and commitment to her in-person groups that she has brought to the online work to date.

The glue that holds the MW Team together is Joan and we are so glad she is staying with us and continues to keep the ship running smoothly, while she minds us all and ensures that all that is needed behind the scenes is in place for staff and members.

Michael and Amie – may the road rise to meet ye, may the wind be always at your backs, and may you be proud of the work you have done, the people ye are, and the difference ye have made.

Grow Midwest Team: Michael Crowe, Joan Diffley, Celia Brett, Amie Hughes, baby Maggie, Mary Purcell

GROW MENTAL HEALTH PODCAST: BE THE CHANGE

We jumped right into the new year with a brand new season of the Grow Mental Health Podcast. We started  2024, as we have in previous years with a discussion on CHANGE. But this time we look at the idea of taking action to be the change you hope to see in your group, your community, and the world. It’s not easy and that first phone call or meeting might feel frightening. But Jenny, Nora, and Diarmuid talk about how the support of your Grow Group and the wisdom of the Grow Program inspire us to be that change and activate ourselves for the good of those around us.

Diarmuid sits on the regional board in the South and has led countless fundraising and awareness campaigns in the region. Notably, he spearheaded a fabulous charity concert last summer at the Triskel Arts Centre in Cork with Jimmy Crowley, Eve Telford, and friends.

Nora co-founded the Kanturk Grow Group 30 years ago and is still an active member and supporter of the group. She was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year in her community for her work with Grow. You Can read more about Nora's award and work in our December Newsletter

Listen to them share their stories and their strategy for modeling change here:

LOVE AFTER LOVE
by Derek Walcott

The time will come
when, with elation,
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror,
and each will smile at the other’s welcome,
and say sit here.  Eat.

You will love again the stranger who was yourself.
Give wine.  Give bread.  Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.

Take down the love letters from the bookshelf
the photographs, the desperate notes,
Peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit.  Feast on your life.
