JUNE 2023 NEWSLETTER

June brings us the longest day of the year and at Grow Mental Health we are celebrating the Summer Solstice with our third annual YELLOWWALK. On June 21st, we will walk, cycle, run, hike, swim, and move for 30 minutes with and among our local community to raise awareness and funds for Grow. Community is one of the core supports for the Grow program of hope and recovery. We heal with our Grow community and contribute to our greater communities as we gain leadership skills. When we have a community around us, anything is possible!

As always, we would love to hear from you. You can reach us on our social media platforms and by email [email protected]

COMMUNITY – FRIENDS, FAMILY, MY TRIBE
by Jonathan, Grow Member in the Eastern Region
When I came to Grow a long time ago I already had family and friends but I was still isolated. When I came to Grow I was welcomed. I listened to these people’s stories. I could empathise, I could see their humanity. Then I could accept my humanity. I listened intently to my group’s stories, and I shared mine. We were bearing ourselves to the core in a sensitive and safe space. I have heard that love and understanding are really the same thing. There was love and compassion in that little room and we bonded. We became friends and our group became family.

As time passed, I got more involved in Grow, I became an organiser and joined the Eastern Regional team. I edited the eastern regional newsletter. I went to Grow weekends away. I met many marvelous people. I got to know and appreciate these human beings. I also got accepted and involved in a caring community.

Not long ago, at my meeting, a man who had been in Grow for 9 or 10 months said that at last, he had found his tribe in Grow. This struck me. And I thought about it. Maybe we are all coming from the same place and going to the same place, Together.

YELLOWWALK 2023
Summer Solstice Edition

WHY WE WALK

We walk for so many reasons - to show support for our loved ones facing mental health challenges, to raise awareness in our community about Grow Mental Health and our services, to spread a sea of hopeful Yellow across Ireland, and to celebrate the joy of summer. We also walk to raise funds for our services. What does this mean, exactly? Though much of the funding for our community peer support groups is granted through the HSE, we are faced with a gap in our budget each year.

The YELLOWWALK and other fundraising events and activities help to fill that gap and keep our weekly meetings on track. Funds are also raised for respite days for our groups and to support members annual national and regional weekends. These gatherings are an important part of the Grow calendar. Please help us this year by registering for a walk in your community. You can learn more here: https://grow.ie/summer-solstice-yellowwalk/

A CHAPTER ENDS FOR GROW
CEO Michele Kerrigan Retires
By John O’Donnell, Acting Chair, Grow Mental Health Board of Directors

It is my personal duty as acting Grow Chairperson and with warm wishes that I announce the departure of our CEO Michele Kerrigan, effective from June 23rd. Michele is taking up a new career opportunity as Executive Director of Care After Prison. Michele’s leaving marks the end of an era for Grow Mental Health in Ireland. Michele was the first person appointed as CEO of the organisation in 2007. During her time, she has led the organisation through structural change, growth, and diversification.

Michele was instrumental in the introduction of our new management and HR structures to support Regional Teams and staff, which for the first time opened up promotional prospects within the Grow organisation. Michele’s funding successes have served the organisation well and will continue to do so into the future. They include funding, to support the Board in its Governance, Risk and Compliance responsibilities, Monitoring & Evaluation & IT.

More recently Michele secured funding to establish our online supports which has aided the organisation in diversifying its offering to the public including our Community Educational Programs. The appointment of our newly appointed National Head of Programs would not have been possible only for her successful negotiations with our funders.

We are indebted to Michele’s commitment for propelling Grow Mental Health to our present position within the mental health arena. Her work has helped to assure our success into the future.

On behalf of the Board and myself I would like to take this opportunity to thank Michele for her, commitment, in bringing Grow Mental Health to where it is today. Michele will be missed by the Board, her colleagues, and Grow Members.

On behalf of everyone in Grow I wish Michele the very best in the next phase of life’s journey.

Yours sincerely,
John O’Donnell
Acting Chair, Grow Mental Health Board of Directors

THANK YOU TO OUR AMAZING FUNDRAISERS

A GENEROUS GESTURE IN DONEGAL
Written by Paul Gibson, Area Coordinator, Northwest Region

Maurice, a Member in the Northwest region was recently approached by someone in their community with a very kind and generous donation. Maurice, a dedicated Grow group organiser, promoter of Grow, and a supportive kind person, was approached by this charitable person in one of our Grow Groups in Co Donegal.

Like so many members and others involved in Grow M.H., Maurice goes above and beyond and is very much appreciated. This kind and very generous donation was given in recognition of a great member and great support in their community. We thank this generous person for the support that will greatly benefit many in the region.

Great appreciation and thanks must also go to Maurice for his dedication, support, encouragement and so much more. A special thanks to all in Grow like Maurice who give so much. It does not go unnoticed.

SHAVING FOR A CAUSE

Do you remember the Mighty Margaret, a Grow member in the Northwest who bravely took on a head shave to raise funds for Grow M.H.? Well, she's only gone and done it! And Margaret has raised an astonishing €670 in the process. The link to donate to Margaret's campaign will remain open for the next few weeks, so we encourage you to make a contribution, large or small to the cause. Go, Margaret. We're loving the new look!

TESCO COMMUNITY FUND
Grow Mental Health received a generous donation of €1,210 from the Bray Ballwaltrim Tesco Community Fund in May of this year to be used for the area Grow Groups. Thank you to Tesco, to Area Coordinator Trish WIlliams who collected the cheque on behalf of Grow, and to all of the shoppers in the Ballwaltrim store who plunked their blue chips into the Grow cylinder.

STORIES OF HOPE AND RECOVERY LAUNCH

On May 17th, many people gathered at the gorgeous Hazel House and Cafe in Tribadden, County Dublin to celebrate the release of Stories of Hope and Recovery. We were welcomed to the retreat centre by owner and Grow member Gerry Farrell, who told us about the vision for Hazel House. Grow CEO Michele Kerrigan spoke to the crowd about Grow and the importance of sharing one's story. Denis Bergin, who generously gave his time in editing and advising for the book spoke about the process of creating the volume. Mike Watts, who collected and curated the stories, as well as giving his own to the book, gave more background on the gathering of each piece. He also spoke about the power of hearing another's story. We were then treated to two readings from Jonathan and Aisling, who are both featured among the 22 real and personal stories.

The weather cooperated and we were able to share a delicious Hazel Cafe lunch outdoors in the gardens and keep the discussion about the book going. It was an ideal launch for this important and beautiful piece of writing. Thank you to everyone who came, especially the many storytellers featured in the book, to make the day so special. A very warm thank you to Gerry for welcoming us to his idyllic venue.

GROW IN THE COMMUNITY
LONGFORD COMMUNITY EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Written by Area Coordinator Assumpta Lyons

The Longford Community Education Program commenced on Wednesday 3rd May and continued for four consecutive Wednesdays at 7.30 PM in the evening. There was very good attendance each evening for the four weeks. The speakers on the first evening were our own Caroline Crotty and John Lonergan the former mount joy governor and author. The topic they covered was how to live a happy and content life. This evening gave a great appetite for the following three weeks which covered the topics of Suicide Awareness in the Community delivered by the newly appointed Suicide Resource Officer for Longford/ Westmeath Patrick Jones and joined by Bernie Carroll Councillor for Pieta House. This then was followed by Boost your mood with Healthy Food delivered by Nutritionists Cathriona Hodgins always a very popular topic. To conclude the four weeks of the program we had Brian Walsh Psychotherapist who delivered a very informative talk on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. As a result of this Community Education Program, we now have a new Grow weekly support meeting which takes place every Monday morning in the local Longford town library at 11 AM which started on the 8th of May. The next and final Community Education Program for this year will take place in County Laois in the autumn. Watch this space!

CONNECTING FOR LIFE, DONEGAL 2022-2024
Midterm Conference: Suicide is Everyone’s Business
Written by Area Coordinator Paul Gibson

Area Coordinators Paul Gibson and Marian Maguire recently represented Grow Mental Health at this networking and informational conference. The event itself gave great awareness to all involved on a difficult but very important topic.

Our stand got huge recognition and created great awareness of Grow Mental Health.  There were several hundred people in attendance and many other networks to connect with which we did with great success on the day. We received recognition for being in attendance by those who kindly organised such a vital conference.

We were approached by a large number of people/professionals on the day in regards to Grow Mental Health, creating great awareness and overall, a very successful promotion for Grow Mental Health in the Northwest region.

A special Thanks to Ciara, for the invite and for organising such a vital and successful event, and for her kind help in Promoting Grow Mental Health on the day.

Southern and Midwestern Day Trip

27th May 2023
Written by Area Coordinator Jerry Cronin

A mesmerized busker turned to the jarvey who was placing the nose-bag on his bay mare’s head, gestured to the crowd gathering at the International Hotel in Killarney’s town centre and asked, “Is it a pattern day, a pilgrimage or a Munster final?” The jarvey, a wise old Kerryman, puffed on his pipe and replied, “It’s none of them.

They have an air of adventure and a smile on their faces; they must be the Grow crowd arriving for a right good day out”. – And when is a wise old Kerryman ever wrong?

It was indeed a great day out. The sun painted the streets of Killarney a bright shade of gold as Grow community members descended on the town by train, bus, and car. They came from Kerry, Cork, Limerick, Clare, Tipperary, and even Kilkenny. All were welcomed by management and staff at the international as if they were long-lost cousins and were treated to a wonderful spread of morning coffee delights. Everyone’s face was radiant as old friends greeted each other for the first time after a long pandemic-imposed separation. The joy and anticipation of the day’s adventures were evident in each person’s countenance as they left the hotel lobby to engage in their choice of activity. This day was off to a great start; it was squaring up to be a fun-filled, joyful day of friendly banter and good company amidst the wonderful scenic beauty that Killarney has to share with all its visitors.

Having enjoyed the refreshments and renewed old acquaintances, our tourists had two hours to spend as they wished. Some boarded a jaunting car in Kenmare Place and embarked on a leisurely drive around the beauty spots in the company of the inimitable, entertaining, and very informative Denis Doona. Others opted for the open-top bus tour of the town and its surrounding places of note. Another group availed of two hours of retail therapy in the fine Outlet Centre and Killarney’s high street while the more adventurous of the day trippers accompanied Diarmuid on a walking tour of Killarney guided by Killarney man, Richard Clancy. There was no denying it; everybody had a smashing morning. The mood and the atmosphere were electric as the group re-assembled in the International with one thing in mind (or maybe three) – music, food, and fun.

All three expectations were met. As the hospitality staff served up a mouthwatering four-course meal that any chef would be proud to claim credit for, the music duo began to play Barr Na Sráide and followed it with The Rocks of Bán as requested by Aileen from West Limerick. The musicians entertained the group with beautiful music and song right through the meal and continued to play until we ended our day out at 5.00 pm. The delighted diners took many breaks between courses to join in the songs, dance a few two steps, and jive the afternoon away.

Like all good things, the day came to an end too soon. As old and new-found friends bade farewell to one another and to Killarney, all agreed on one point – we had just had a magic day in the Kingdom or, as the old jarvey had predicted, we had a right good day out. Let’s do it all again soon.
